Divi 5 is a ground-up rebuild rather than a cosmetic update. Elegant Themes' current documentation describes a new foundation intended to improve performance and unlock more modern layout and design-system capabilities.

Important Divi 5 capabilities

Existing Divi 4 sites

Elegant Themes says Divi 4 content and legacy third-party modules can continue through backward compatibility mode. That compatibility layer loads the Divi 4 framework, so it does not provide all of Divi 5's performance and stability improvements.

Upgrade safely

Elegant Themes recommends testing an existing site on staging first and making a complete backup of both files and database before migration.

Bottom line: New Divi sites can evaluate Divi 5 directly. Existing production sites should treat migration as a controlled technical change, especially when third-party Divi extensions are involved.
